What Are The Different Types Of Armored Cables?

Published by Author: Joey Wan September 18,2023

Steel wire armored cables are designed to have mechanical protection, which is why the cables are often used for external use.

Armoring avoids the chance of the cable being pinched or damaged, and steel armor is used to protect the cable.SWA cables are heavy, which makes them difficult to bend. Therefore, they are more suitable for underground wiring or fixed to outdoor walls using cable clamps.

Steel Wire Armored Cable is a power and auxiliary control cable designed for use on main power lines. It is one of a variety of protected electrical links - carrying 11kV cables and 33kV cables - that can be used in underground systems and frames, cable networks, power networks, control systems, outdoor, indoor applications and cable ducts.

Armored cable is a regular cable with a protective layer between the sheaths. It can withstand higher tension and be buried directly underground.

Armored cables are divided into steel wire armored cables. Steel tape armored cable. Aluminum or aluminum alloy wire armored cable.

Steel wire armored cable is often abbreviated as SWA  185mm 4 core steel wire armored cable, 50mm 3 core steel wire armored cable.

Steel tape armored cable is usually abbreviated as STA (SteelTapeArmor) galvanized steel tape armored cable, double steel tape armored cable.

Aluminum or aluminum wire armored cable is usually abbreviated as AWA (AluminumWireArmoring) 95mm 4 core armored cable aluminum, 4c x 95 sq. mm. aluminum armored cable.

The structure of SWA cable is from the inside out, with conductor (usually copper conductor or aluminum conductor), insulation (XLPE or PVC) inner sheath (PVC) armoring (wire or steel strip) outer sheath (PVC).

Conductor: Mainly conducts electricity and transmits electricity. Copper conductor has strong conductivity and aluminum conductor is weak.

Insulating material: cross-linked polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride (cross-linked polyethylene is more expensive but has better softness, while polyvinyl chloride is cheaper and softer.)

Armoring: Protects the cable from damage by mechanical external forces.
